Chapter Twelve

Sabrina

“I hate to say I told you so,” Amber says, clearly gloating, “but I told you so.”

I laugh and shake my head. “Yeah, yeah, fine. Whatever,” I say. “Enjoy your little victory.”

“Oh, I plan on it.”

We're sitting at a small, outdoor cafe in Santa Monica, having some brunch. I called her after getting back from Seattle a couple of days ago and told her I need to catch her up on everything that's been happening lately. She's my best friend. Of course I tell her everything.

I sip my mimosa and look out at the Santa Monica pier, and the blue waters of the Pacific beyond the shore. The sunlight sparkles off the water and surfers cut up the faces of a surprisingly large set of waves — the product of a storm down in Mexico.

When we got back from Seattle, I wasn't sure what to expect from Evan, to be honest. I mean, I wasn't expecting some grand proclamation of love or anything, but I really haven't seen much of him since we got home.

“And? How are things now?” she asks. “Are you guys like, an official thing yet?”

“Hardly,” I sigh. “I almost feel like he's avoiding me.”

Amber frowns. “Avoiding you?”

“Yeah, I see him at work and whatnot, but that's all professional, of course,” I say. “Outside of work, I haven't heard a peep from him.”

“Well, that's odd,” she says.

I flash her a wry smile. “Ya think?”

“And nothing happened up there?” she asks. “I mean, aside from him knocking a man out cold, and a ton of mind-blowing, life-altering sex?”

I laugh and throw a grape at her. “No, nothing happened,” I say. “It's just kind of like he's dropped off the face of the planet.”

“Well, from what you've told me, he's a tough nut to crack.”

“To put it mildly, yeah.”

“Well, let me ask you this. Do you want to be with him?”

I nod. “Very much so,” I answer. “I still have all of the feelings I had for him when I was a kid. But they're like, even stronger now.”

“Well, now that you've had some experience, and know what you want and don't want in a man, that makes sense,” she replies.

“Yeah, I guess,” I say. “Honestly, I didn't even know I was still carrying this torch around until I ran into him again.”

“Well, not consciously,” she says. “But the mind is a complex thing. Obviously, Evan is your ideal man. He's the one you measure all others by. Whether you realize it or not.”

I roll my eyes and laugh. “This sounds like some stupid rom-com.”

Amber takes a sip of her mimosa. “Where do you think those stupid rom-coms get all their ideas?” she asks. “From real life. Obviously, they're exaggerated, but the ideas are rooted in reality.”

“God, if my life starts looking anything like a Reese Witherspoon movie, I'm going to walk straight out into traffic.”

Amber laughs. “Well, if you want to be with him, it sounds to me like you're going to have to be the one who takes the bull by the horns here.
